  • 2016 Ford Mustang S550 GT [Race Red]

    Hey all!

With the new deliveries of the Ford Mustang rolling out recently, we've gotten our hands on one of the first Race Red GTs on the road.

This particular car came with quite a few delivery defects:
    • Sanding marks
    • Directional scratches and swirls
    • Adhesive residue
    • Touch-up spots

One of the more unusual defects was raised lines from moulding on the plastic bumpers. These moulding lines had extremely thin paint (or none at all) and had to be masked carefully to avoid easily removing the paint.

We proceeded with a two-stage correction, followed by two layers of Opti-Coat Pro+ and topped with Concours Nova Jet for that extra bling and protection.

The swirls were numerous but pretty hard to capture as the vividness of the red paint caused clipping in the camera.

    Thanks for reading!

It's been hard. I've had to schedule an X3 on the weekend just to get my fix.

Great work guys. Interesting to read about the lack of paint on the mouldings. A bit average really :/

The Mustang has had a lot of paint issues though they've improved significantly since the first deliveries. IMO a big contributor for the problems is the wet on wet process that used. This is where the clear coat is applied onto a wet basecoat which has been applied onto a wet primer coat. In other words, none of the coats are dried before the next coat is applied. This is where the runs are coming from and the subsequent spot repairs etc. Runs are missed, repairs aren't done well and the end product frequently makes it to the end customer in a less than perfect state.

Cost is of course the driver here. It cuts manufacture time saving them money and many buyers will never notice minor defects as they're not that detail oriented and overall the car looks good.
